About Protego
Protego is an independent family-safety app built by a small team who got tired of family trackers that look and feel like delivery-fleet software. We thought a tracker should feel like something a family willingly invites into their daily life — closer to a quiet protection charm than a dispatch dashboard.
Why we built it
Most family tracking apps are built around one philosophy: a parent watching children. The framing is control. The aesthetic is clinical. The experience feels exactly like what it is — surveillance software with a family-app skin on top. Teens and tweens sense it within seconds of opening the app, which is part of why they fight against being added to the circle.
We built Protego around the opposite idea. A family is a fellowship, not a hierarchy of control. Safety should feel mutual — everyone sees everyone, framed as a shared charm woven around the people you love. The aesthetic should match the kind of stories the families using it actually love. The mechanics (real-time GPS, geofencing, journey history) should be exactly as serious as any other family tracker — they just shouldn't feel like surveillance.
The name
Protego is the Latin word for "I protect." It's also the name of the shield-charm in popular fantasy fiction — a protective magic cast openly, in full view, around someone you want to keep safe. That root word, and that framing, is the whole philosophy of the app.
The viral moment
In late spring of 2026, a TikTok we made with the caption "Delete Life360. Here's what HP fans should use instead." took off unexpectedly. Across our brand TikTok accounts, the viral content has crossed 3M+ total views. The pattern was the same in every comment thread: families who had been quietly putting up with Life360 because nothing else existed, discovering there was finally an alternative built specifically for them.
We're still a small team, still iterating, and still humbled by the response. Thank you to everyone who shared, downloaded, and gave us feedback.
What we actually believe
- Family safety should feel mutual, not hierarchical. Mutual visibility (kids see parents too) is the most effective trust-builder in family tracking, and we built around that.
- Privacy isn't a tagline. We don't sell location data, we don't share it with brokers, we don't aggregate it for resale. Our entire revenue comes from paid plans for larger family circles. That's it.
- Aesthetic is functional. An app your kids willingly open protects more people than a feature-richer app they fight against. The magical theme isn't decoration — it's the buy-in problem solved.
- Honest comparisons. When Life360 has a feature we don't (crash detection), we say so. When something else fits your family better than us, we say that too. We'd rather have the right families using Protego than the wrong ones disappointed.
